What is Masteria Academy?
Masteria Academy is a mastery-based learning program designed around a simple idea: students should move forward when they demonstrate that they understand a skill—not simply because a certain amount of time has passed.

Rather than treating learning as one-size-fits-all, Masteria allows students to focus on specific skills, receive targeted instruction and support, and demonstrate mastery before progressing.

What does “Where Mastery Lights the Way” mean?
It reflects our belief that demonstrated learning should guide a student's educational journey. Instead of focusing primarily on time spent in a course, Masteria focuses on what a student knows, understands, and can do.

Is Masteria a traditional online school?
No. Masteria is being designed differently from the traditional online-school model. Learning is organized around specific competencies, or skills students need to master, rather than simply completing assignments and moving through a course according to a calendar.

HOW LEARNING WORKS

What is mastery-based learning?
Mastery-based learning allows students to work on a specific skill until they can demonstrate that they understand and can apply it. Students who need additional instruction receive more opportunities to learn and practice, while students who demonstrate mastery can continue forward.

How does Masteria know when a student has mastered a skill?
Students are asked to demonstrate learning in more than one way. Depending on the learning experience, this may include assessments, authentic application of the skill, and opportunities to explain or defend their understanding.

The goal is not simply to earn a score, it is to provide meaningful evidence that learning has occurred.

Can students retake an assessment if they haven't mastered the skill yet?
Yes. Needing another opportunity is part of learning. Students may receive additional instruction, practice, and opportunities to demonstrate mastery rather than having one unsuccessful attempt permanently determine the outcome.

Does self-paced mean students are on their own?
No. Self-paced does not mean unsupported. Masteria combines student ownership with structured learning materials, progress monitoring, and opportunities for instructional support.

LEARNING PATHS

What subjects and skills will Masteria offer?
Masteria is being developed around individual academic competencies, beginning with targeted learning paths in English Language Arts and mathematics. Additional competencies and subject areas can be added as Masteria grows.

Does my child have to enroll in an entire grade-level course?
Not necessarily. One of the goals of Masteria is to allow families to identify and address specific areas of need rather than requiring a student to repeat or purchase an entire course simply because they struggle with one or two skills.

For example, a student might need help analyzing textual evidence, working with fractions, solving equations, or writing an effective argument. Masteria Learning Paths are designed to target those needs directly.

What happens after my child masters a competency?
The student's demonstrated mastery becomes part of their learning record, and they can move forward to the next appropriate competency or Learning Path.

PARENTS & STUDENTS

How involved are parents?
Masteria views parents and caregivers as important partners in the learning process. Families should be able to understand what their student is working on, where progress is occurring, and where additional support may be needed.

What if my child learns differently from other students?
That's one of the reasons Masteria was created. Students don't all learn at the same speed or in exactly the same way. A mastery model provides room for additional practice and support without treating learning as a race.

Is Masteria only for students who are struggling?
No. Mastery-based learning can benefit students who need additional support as well as students who are ready for greater challenge. The focus is on meeting students at their current level of understanding and helping them progress from there.

ENROLLMENT & ACCESS

How do I know which Learning Path my child needs?
Masteria's assessment process is designed to help identify specific skill gaps and areas in which a student may benefit from targeted instruction. Families can then make more informed decisions about the appropriate Learning Path.

How much does Masteria cost?
Pricing may vary depending on the Learning Path and level of support selected. Current pricing and available options will be provided on the Enrollment page.

How long does a student have access to a Learning Path?
Students who purchase an individual competency Learning Path receive ongoing access to the learning materials associated with that competency, subject to Masteria's program terms.

Is additional coaching available?
Yes. Families who want additional support may choose Mastery Coaching, which can provide opportunities for live instructional support, feedback, reassessment, and progress communication.
